A recent case at an animal hospital in Fort Myers, Florida, was so disturbing that the staff had to involve the local sheriff's office.
A 16-year-old yellow lab named Molly was admitted in an appalling state. She was emaciated, extremely weak, and had maggots infesting her body, even emerging from her rectum.
Maggots "feed on decaying organic matter," which indicates that Molly's body had already begun to decay while she was still alive. The situation is beyond heartbreaking.
The veterinarian who attended to Molly immediately recognised that her condition was the result of long-term neglect. It's gut-wrenching to imagine the suffering she endured before being brought to the hospital. Tragically, the only option left for the vets was to relieve Molly's pain by humanely euthanising her.
Although we may not know all the details of Molly's 16 years, the circumstances of her death make it clear that her owner should never be allowed near animals again.
