Badger baiting, a barbaric activity where badgers are drawn out of their setts and forced to fight dogs, is not only an act of extreme cruelty but also a serious wildlife crime. Despite existing legislation, the penalties for such heinous acts remain insufficiently deterrent, resulting in continued suffering for wildlife.
In response to this pressing issue, we are launching a petition to urge the UK Government to take decisive action by implementing the following measures:
- Increase Penalties for Wildlife Crimes: We demand a significant increase in the penalties for badger baiting and other wildlife crimes. Such acts should be classified as 'either-way' offences, carrying a maximum sentence of up to five years imprisonment. This will send a clear message that wildlife crimes are serious offences and will be met with substantial consequences.
- Notifiable Status for Wildlife Crimes: To ensure accurate recording and monitoring of wildlife crimes, we propose that more of these offences are given notifiable status. This crucial step will enable better data collection, aiding in the effective enforcement of laws and the development of strategies to combat such crimes.
- Incorporate Wildlife Crime into Policing Education: We believe that the incorporation of wildlife crime into the Policing Education Qualification Framework is essential. This will equip new officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognise, respond to, and prevent wildlife crimes, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement in protecting our nation's wildlife.
The time for change is now. Our wildlife cannot speak for themselves, and it is our duty to be their voice and protect them from harm. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand against cruelty and advocating for a future where our wildlife is respected and protected.
Join us in this critical mission. Together, we can make a difference.
